FLU Drug causes Psychiatric Episodes?

November 14th, 2006

For real! Just this morning the FDA (bless their little hearts) put out a new warning on TAMIFLU the “wonder” drug that was suppose to save us from the dreaded Flu bug…  Seems the “wonder drug” has now caused: hallucinations, suicide thoughts, deaths and other mental problems. I just “wonder” what’s REALLY in those little pills?

Sleepy? But can’t get to or stay asleep?

October 19th, 2006

I’ve mentioned this in a few newsletters but it seems to be such a hot topic I’m going to mention it again here…

Sleep… or lack of it… seems to be the number 1 problem next to weight issues that men and women face today…

Try this: eat a bit of whole grain with protein right before you go to bed. Whole grains have carbs that will increase the serotonin in your brain. Eating a meal with carbs, along with proteins that have the amino acid tryptophan, can help insomnia and balance the blood sugar throughout the night.

A half-cup of whole grain cereal with skim organic milk about an hour before bed is great. Or hummus on a whole-wheat pita or a rice cake topped with a tomato and a slice of turkey breast.

Take about 4000iu of D3 vitamin and off you go to slumber land…

It’s NOT in the Genes….

October 18th, 2006

Interesting headlines again today…

“Good family life may counter depression gene”… NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A loving, supportive family can be enough to override a genetic vulnerability to depression, new research suggests. Studies have found that people who carry a “short” version of the serotonin transporter gene — known as 5-HTTLPR — tend to be more susceptible to depression than people without this gene variant. But the new findings, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, show that to be true only of gene carriers who grew up in a stressful home environment. In contrast, the investigators found that young adult gene carriers whose families were warm and supportive had a reduced risk of depression.

You see…. It’s NOT the Genes! (geez… these silly gooses… when will they learn?!)

Next headline: “Positive emotions lower blood pressure”… NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Having a positive outlook makes life more enjoyable, and it may also lower blood pressure in older adults. Among more than 2,500 people aged 65 or older, the higher a person scored on a questionnaire measuring positive emotions, the lower was his or her blood pressure. “Our thoughts and emotions do affect our physical processes,” Dr. Glenn V. Ostir of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, the study’s lead author, told Reuters Health. “The nice thing is that we have some control over that.”

Told you so…. (sorry… I just love being right!)

Of course… these studies are very behind the times really… L. Ron Hubbard figured all this out way back in 1950!

“Sometimes” Stupid?

August 28th, 2006

Look at the pic below… read it carefully…

Now explain to me how the drug company that ran that picture to promote its drugs can promote that “SOMETIMES I HAVE ADHD?”

If it was a real disease you wouldn’t “SOMETIMES” have it! Like… I “sometimes” have Cancer… or I “sometimes” have Diabetes… or I “sometimes” have AIDS!

Now of course… you CAN “sometimes” have Stupidity… just like the drug companies and psychiatrists!

Plan A, “Plan B” and Plan C? God Help Us…

August 24th, 2006

The recent FDA approval of “Plan B” totally astounds me! I’m disgusted with our government. I’m disgusted with our health system. I’m disgusted with the public’s desire for more and more reasons to be irresponsible.

So, let’s see… you have irresponsible sex tonight (Plan A).. oh … don’t worry… in the morning you can take a pill (Plan B). So… our government, and those who sell “Plan B” are telling our young people that irresponsible promiscuity is ok… we now have something that will help you to cover up your little transgressions. How convenient.

Did you know that birth control was created by someone right here in the US who was a

Saliva Hormone testing vs. Blood Testing

August 15th, 2006

Are the levels of steroid hormones in blood and saliva the same? When the various glands manufacture the steroids they are released into the bloodstream bound to carrier proteins. Only a small fraction (1-5%) of a given amount of steroid hormone breaks loose from the carrier protein in the bloodstream and is free to enter target tissues. This free or unbound hormone is what we want to measure, since it is active or bioavailable to the target tissues such as the breast, uterus, brain, and skin.

Many studies in the scientific literature have shown that there is a strong correlation between the levels of steroid hormones in saliva and the bioavailable (free) levels of steroids in the bloodstream. The amount of steroid hormone that enters the salivary ducts and then saliva, is representative of the fraction of steroids in the bloodstream that are bioavailable to other tissues in the body. Advantages of saliva vs blood testing of steroid hormones Saliva collection is easy, can be done anywhere, any time and at a much lower cost. Serum hormone testing is stressful, and the stress of a blood draw can sometimes alter the result. Blood has to be drawn at a doctor’s office or drawing station, and it is more difficult to obtain samples at the desired times (e.g. early am), multiple times through the day or late evening. There is also an extra cost involved in drawing blood, independent of the cost for the test itself.

Saliva testing may help you to gain insight into health problems before you see your doctor. It will also allow you to monitor
