What exactly is Estrogen WAKE-UP ?
Progesterone seems to work at various stages and at various levels. These changes occur for the majority of women in the first 10 days, 6-8 weeks, then there is a change at 4 months, another at 7 months, a further change around 12 months and finally another roughly at 18 months, based on the individual and her specific condition. If you are not aware of these stages, you may misinterpret the signs as progesterone losing its effect, when in actual fact it can represent the opposite! Because we are reintroducing progesterone back into the body and thereby sensitizing and stimulating the estrogen receptor sites in the body, there are the immediate, and long term benefits and side effects (estrogen dominance wake-up crisis!). From observation, we have found the immediate benefits which generally occur within the first 10 days of usage range from instant calming, clearer thinking, feeling more grounded, able to cope with stress better, reduction or elimination of headaches, bettered sleep, less PMS type symptoms and less breast tenderness.
On the other side of the coin, as a consequence of bringing progesterone back into the body and waking up estrogen receptor sites, women can actually go through a bit of a roller-coaster of symptoms that can be confusing and uncomfortable if they don’t understand what is happening. That is why I do suggest the usage of a very good phytoestrogen diet especially during the first phase of using progesterone. By eating phytoestrogens it helps to tone down and reduce estrogen dominance wake-up and any associated symptoms.
Some common symptoms of estrogen wake-up are: breakthrough bleeding, increased tenderness of the breast, headaches, hot flushes, fluid retention, panic attacks, irritability, muscle pain, acne, weight gain, palpitations… this list can go on and on… the bottom line is the WORST thing to do is stop progesterone! Now is the time to increase phytoestrogen foods in your diet, get saliva tested to see exactly what is going on and increase your progesterone for a few weeks to almost double the dose. Remember: estrogen dominance wake-up can occur anytime but we’ve noticed it most at the following points in natural hormone therapy…within the first 10 days, then again at 6-8 weeks, again at 4 months, another at 7 months, a further one at 12 months and finally at 18 months. This does NOT mean that EVERY woman goes through this at exactly those points… this is an average for most but certainly not all women.
The key to using natural hormones is the ensure that after the first 6 to 12 weeks of using the cream that you start to take a break for at least 3 days up to 10 days from using the cream each month. This will allow your body’s natural progesterone receptors to relax and not wear out and also allows the progesterone to work at its peak performance each and every month.
How would I know if I have to use more Progesterone?
Good question! If reducing dosage doesn’t help or perhaps increases discomfort, then it indicates the need to increase your progesterone dosage and pay particular attention to increasing your intake of phytoestrogens in your diet to oppose estrogen dominance wake-up.
This situation of estrogen wakeup often follows an episode of stress which would account for the shortage of progesterone and the increase of estrogen levels! This is almost always the case! So increase your progesterone and phytoestrogens and then drop progesterone back to your previous dose once balance has been achieved and the symptoms have subsided.
One of the biggest players in robbing progesterone supplies and creating hormone imbalance can be STRESS, pulling progesterone into another steroid pathway in the body to create the “survival” hormones - cortisol and adrenalin. If there has been stress, high pain levels, shock, trauma, surgery, illness or unresolved emotional issues or relationship problems, chances are there is a progesterone deficiency in the body requiring high levels of progesterone cream to help compensate temporarily.
You can apply more cream until you reach an emotional equilibrium, this may take a few days up to two weeks to achieve. Follow the guidelines on How to use Natural Hormone Creams that we have included.
I seem to get nausea during the month … is the progesterone causing that?
Probably not! Nausea NEARLY ALWAYS INDICATES LIVER DYSFUNCTION! And the need to support this organ of the body. A dysfunctional liver simply cannot tolerate and cope too well with the introduction of a new hormone even though the hormone is needed by the body. This may mean it’s time to increase the progesterone not cut back. It’s kind of like if you use just a little you’re literally “tickling” the estrogen receptor sites and they get upset… so the solutions is to increase or double dose at this point. Some women who have experienced levels of nausea on progesterone are nervous and reluctant to increase their dose. But this is exactly what they need to do. If low dosages aren’t resolving your health issues, you need to push forward onto a higher dose temporarily.
Now… back to your liver… the liver is where the body makes the building blocks for your hormones. The liver is also the organ that breaks down the excess hormones as part of the body’s balancing of the hormonal systems. In summary, the liver helps make and metabolize your hormones and maintain them in a state of balance. If your liver is dysfunctional so are your hormones! A woman with a fatty, dysfunctional liver will require far greater dosages of progesterone perhaps with minimal benefits. She will also feel more tired and nauseated. If you are one of those men or women who experience nausea I suggest getting onto a “Lemon Water” (made with 1 part real natural lemon and 9 parts distilled water ONLY; drink every two hours) fast for one to three days to cleanse out and help your live to start working at capacity. You may also chew on some ginger (found at a natural health food store) to help the nausea (remember your mom giving you ginger-ale to drink when you had a stomach ache?… it contains tiny amounts of ginger!)
